Over the last two weeks, we’ve talked about being Rooted in God and Listening with Love. This week, as we continue our family series, our theme is Choosing Kindness.

Scripture reminds us that our words are powerful. They can build up or tear down. Within our families especially, our words shape the atmosphere of our homes. If we are not careful, one careless comment can change the tone of an entire day.

I often think of a tube of toothpaste—once it’s squeezed out, you can’t put it back in. The same is true of our words. Once spoken, they cannot be taken back.

Ephesians 4:29–32 gives us clear guidance: we are to speak in ways that build others up, put away bitterness and anger, and be kind and compassionate, forgiving one another just as Christ forgave us.

As we seek to lead our families to be more centered on Jesus, let’s lead by choosing kindness. Let’s be intentional about speaking words that build up rather than tear down. Paul’s instruction is simple and powerful: “Be kind to one another.”

This week, consider asking your children how hurtful words make them feel. Help them think about how they can choose kindness in what they say.

One practical idea: have each family member share one kind word or encouragement each day this week—and start today.

Let’s choose kindness together.
