Wow—what a week it has been. I never expected to be iced in for an entire week, but here we are. I hope you and your family have been able to stay safe and warm.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but being iced in with our family has definitely been an adventure. There has been some really sweet family time—moments we will cherish for a long time. There have also been opportunities for learning and growth. And, if I’m being honest, there have been some very difficult moments as well. I think we may all be a little on each other’s last nerves.
This extended time together has gotten me thinking about the ways our families can continue to grow. I’ve started mapping out some ideas that might help us grow spiritually as families.
The first is this: we must be rooted in God as a family.
Psalm 1:1–3 says:
“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”
For our families to grow strong in the Lord, we must be rooted in Him—digging into His Word and delighting in it. For our kids especially, it’s important that they see their parents delighting in God’s Word and inviting them into that time as well.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not great at including my kids and family in this consistently. This is an area where I need to grow too—bringing them into what I’m studying and letting them see how important my relationship with God truly is.
What are some ways you and your family can grow closer to God and become more rooted in Him? How is your family doing with the spiritual goals you set at the beginning of this new year?
