TODD’S TAKE
Good morning and welcome! We're so glad to be together as a church family today. If you're our guest this morning, thank you for being here—we'd love to get to know you.
Three weeks from today we celebrate Easter — and everything we believe hinges on it. The resurrection of Jesus is not a footnote to our faith. It is the foundation.
But getting to Easter requires walking through something first.
There is an ancient season of the church calendar called Lent — forty days of fasting, prayer, and preparation leading up to the celebration of the resurrection. We don't observe Lent here, and that's all right. But the idea at the heart of it is not something we can ignore, because it comes straight from the mouth of Jesus himself.
"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it." — Luke 9:23–24
That word daily changes everything. Jesus is not describing a religious season or a one-time spiritual experience. He is describing a way of life — the way of life, actually, for anyone who wants to follow him.
Over the next four weeks, leading right up to Easter Sunday, we are going to dig into what self-denial really means, what it costs, and — more importantly — where it leads. Because Jesus does not call us to self-denial to make our lives smaller. He calls us to it because he can see something we cannot yet see: that the road through surrender is the road to the life we were actually made for.
This morning we lay the foundation with three ground rules. Think of them as the non-negotiables before we go any further.
Take a moment before worship and focus your hearts and minds on God. Allow this time to speak to you and empower you to live the life of discipleship you have committed to.
