TODD’S TAKE

Good morning and welcome to our worship services. If you are a guest with us today, our prayer is that you are blessed by our time of worship. We invite you to talk with any of us about how God is working through the Park Avenue Church.

Today we continue our sermon series "The Crown" as we journey through the reign of Israel's third king, Solomon.

Solomon is known for several things:

  • The son of the legendary King David. While he inherited his father's throne, Solomon certainly made a name for himself as his power and wealth exceeded that of his father.
  • The builder of the temple. Solomon carried out the dream of his father as he oversaw the construction of the beautiful temple that would stand for over 300 years as a tribute to the glory and majesty of God.
  • He was noted for his wisdom. Rulers from around the world marveled at his wisdom and traveled far and wide to sit at his feet to glean from his understanding.
  • He was wealthy beyond our imagination. Solomon amassed wealth that surpassed most rulers of the ancient world. Gold was in abundance. Weaponry was stockpiled. His palace was the envy of the world. Riches flowed in from nations in all directions.

It seemed like Solomon lacked nothing. In spite of this, he chronicles in the book of Ecclesiastes that all the fame, all the wealth, all the power added up to nothing. As he reflects on all these things, he concludes that they are all meaningless, or as translated in the older versions, vanity.

Let it be known that fame, wealth, and power are not wrong. In fact, in Solomon's case, these were the direct results of God's promise to him at the beginning of his reign. Yet one of the lessons we take from this affluent king is that life is so much more than all these things, and our obsession with such will leave us empty if we do not have a relationship with the Lord.

Ecclesiastes concludes with the wise summary:

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV)
