TODD'S TAKE

Good morning and welcome to our worship. To all our guests, we are glad to have you with us and if you have any questions please feel free to find a minister or elder and we’d be more than happy to help. Members and guests, please complete a digital communication card that can be accessed on the church app or by scanning the QR code below.

Today I will be continuing the series “Cries of Desperation.”  This morning we will look at Nicodemus’s cry of desperation when Jesus says to him that he must be born again. Nicodemus’s response is, “How can someone be born when they are old?”

Nicodemus was steeped in a certain way of understanding God, and Jesus’ teaching and ministry has challenged that. In a sense Jesus is asking Nicodemus to rethink just about everything he believed about God and his kingdom and to this seasoned religious man that seemed almost more than a person can bear. It’s seemed almost as impossible as a grown man entering his mother’s womb to be born again!

Change is difficult but Nicodemus needed to change if he is to enter the kingdom. As it stands right now he is spiritually withering away as a result of tradition and legalism and I think he feels this. Why else would he even seek out Jesus? And there is perhaps the greatest lesson we can learn from this older man—be a person who is always seeking.

Nicodemus was willing to admit that perhaps he didn’t have all the answers that he thought he had. Nicodemus was willing to put his reputation on the line to meet with this ”radical” self-proclaimed rabbi. Nicodemus wasn’t willing just to accept what others said about Jesus—he wanted to hear the man out.

Nicodemus reminds us that we all need to be seekers no matter how old we are. We all need to maintain hearts that are moldable to new truths. And when those new truths are revealed we must be willing to follow that Spirit who often times carries us like a kite on an unpredictable wind.

It’s not easy being told that something you believed for years isn't true. But it’s sadder to be so close-minded that truth has no chance to break through the impenetrable layers of tradition that have built up in our minds.

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God

unless they are born again.”

John 3:3
