TODD’S TAKE
What a joy it is to have you with us this morning. We are so glad you chose to spend part of your day here — worshiping together, sharing communion, and opening God's Word.
For the past two weeks we have been living in Psalm 110, and this Sunday we bring the series to a close. It has been quite a journey through what many scholars consider the most remarkable seven verses in the entire Old Testament — a psalm so powerful that the early church couldn't stop quoting it. From the lips of Jesus to the letters of Paul to the final pages of Revelation, this ancient song echoes throughout the entire New Testament.
Psalm 110 is, at its heart, a conversation David overhears from heaven. The Father is speaking to the Son. And what David hears is stunning news: Jesus reigns. He is seated on the throne. He is King.
Week One we camped on that great truth — Christ is on the throne, even when the world feels like it's coming apart at the seams. Week Two we responded to it — if Jesus is King and he wins, the only reasonable response is to align ourselves with him.
This week we turn to verse 4, and the psalm introduces us to a second and equally important role that Jesus plays. Being King is not enough. We also need a Priest — someone who can bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful people. Someone who can not only win the kingdom but make us fit to live in it.
To answer that need, the psalm points us to one of the most mysterious figures in all of Scripture — a man who appears in Genesis, says almost nothing, and vanishes just as quickly as he came. His name is Melchizedek. This morning we will discover why this mysterious priest-king holds the key to understanding Jesus — and why the gospel is not just good news about a King who wins, but about a Priest who makes us worthy of the victory.
Several of our women are away this weekend at the Ladies Retreat on Lake Texoma. We are praying they have a wonderful time in fellowship and in the Word as they explore what it means to be the light. We are deeply grateful to all those who invested so many hours planning and preparing for this retreat.
