BULLETIN ARTICLE

Good morning and welcome to our worship service. It is always a joy to see our church family. We are also happy to have you as a guest this morning, and if we can help you in any way along your spiritual journey, please let us know.

This morning we continue the series The Divided Crown as we walk through the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel.

Last week we met Jeroboam — the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel — and watched him turn a God-given opportunity for generational blessing into a generational curse. His downfall came down to a single word: fear. He was afraid of losing his grip on power, and so rather than trusting God he built golden calves, appointed unauthorized priests, and constructed a religion designed around his own political survival. Fear will do that every time.

This morning we continue our journey through the northern kingdom — and if you're hoping things get better, I want to be honest with you upfront. They don't.

We encounter five kings in today's passage: Nadab, Baasha, Elah, Zimri, and Omri. Different men, different circumstances, different methods of gaining and losing power — but the biblical writer renders essentially the same verdict on every one of them. They did evil in the eyes of the Lord and followed the example of Jeroboam. Five kings. One verdict.

But these men are not merely ancient history. Each one carries a warning that is as relevant today as it was three thousand years ago. One warns us about the danger of carrying on patterns of faithlessness we inherited from those before us. Another warns us about ignoring the voices God sends into our lives. Another about the distractions that make us feel good while keeping us from doing good. Another about wasting the influence and time we have been given. And one — perhaps the most sobering of all — warns us about spending our one life building the wrong kingdom.

Five kings. Five failures. Five warnings.
